Transfer Nice to Gourdon & Gorges du Loup
Forty kilometres inland from the coast, the river Loup has cut a canyon through the limestone and left one village standing on the cliff above it. Gourdon sits at 760 metres on a rock with a view that reaches from the Alps to the sea — on a clear day you can see eighty kilometres of coastline in a single sweep. Below it the Gorges du Loup wind past waterfalls and turquoise pools, and on the way home lies Tourrettes-sur-Loup, the village of violets. Around 50 minutes from Nice.
The Drive into the Hills
The road leaves the coast at Cagnes, climbs past Vence and follows the Loup valley inland. The last stretch to Gourdon is a series of tight switchbacks cut into the cliff face — spectacular, and the reason a good many visitors who set out in a hire car turn back. Fifty minutes in all, and the landscape changes completely: pine and limestone instead of palms, and air several degrees cooler than the seafront.
The classic route is a loop rather than a there-and-back. Up the eastern side of the gorge to Gourdon, down the western side past the Cascade de Courmes and the Saut du Loup, then out through Tourrettes-sur-Loup. It takes about half a day with stops, and it works far better with someone else driving — the gorge road is narrow, one-way in places, and the viewpoints are exactly where stopping is hardest.

FAQ
How long does the trip take?
About 50 minutes each way direct. Allow two and a half to three hours for the full gorge loop with stops — most guests book a half day.
Is the road difficult?
The final climb is a narrow series of hairpins on the cliff. It is perfectly safe with a driver who knows it, which is why many visitors prefer not to drive it themselves.
Can we stop at the waterfalls?
Yes. The loop road passes the Cascade de Courmes and the Saut du Loup, and we stop at both for photographs.
Can we combine it with Saint-Paul-de-Vence?
Yes — Vence and Saint-Paul are on the way back and add roughly an hour to the day.
